Introduction

In StrataVAR Partner Quoting Workspace (PqW), a Customer Quote is the central record where Bills of Materials (BoMs), quote items, pricing, and calculations are assembled into a customer-ready quote.

This article explains how to create a Customer Quote, using the two supported entry points:

  • Creating a quote directly from an imported BoM
  • Creating a quote from an Opportunity (without BoMs initially)

Both approaches ultimately create the same Customer Quote record and launch the PqW Console.

Why This Is Needed & Where It Fits in the User Journey

A Customer Quote is required before you can:

  • Add BoMs or BoM items for pricing
  • Adjust pricing, margins, or quantities
  • Assign suppliers and Ship-To details
  • Export or submit a quote for approval

Customer Quote creation typically happens after BoM import or at the start of a new quoting effort.

What Is a Customer Quote?

A Customer Quote:

  • Is linked to an Account and Opportunity
  • Acts as the parent record for all BoMs and quote items
  • Launches the PqW Console
  • May initially contain no BoMs or pre-associated BoMs, depending on how it is created

Two Ways to Create a Customer Quote

PqW supports two valid ways to create a Customer Quote:

Method When to Use
From a BoM When a BoM is already imported and ready for quoting
From an Opportunity When starting a quote before importing or selecting BoMs

Option 1: Create a Customer Quote from an Imported BoM

Use this approach when a BoM has already been imported (via API or file) and you want to immediately start quoting from it.

Step-by-Step Process

Navigate to the Imported BoM

  1. Go to the BoMs tab in org once a BoM has been imported.
  2. Open the required BoM record with the hyperlinked BoM number.

Create a New Quote from the BoM

  1. From the BoM detail page, open the Actions menu.
  2. Click Create New Quote.

Automatic Quote Creation

PqW automatically creates a Customer Quote.

The quote is:

  • Linked to the BoM’s Opportunity
  • Associated with the correct Account
  • You are redirected to the Quote detail page

Important:
At this stage, the Customer Quote exists, but BoMs or items may not yet be fully assembled into the Quote.

Launch PqW Console for Quote Assembly

From the Quote detail page:

  1. Click Copy BoMs to Quote (or Edit Quote, depending on context)
  2. This launches the PqW Console. Here, you can select the required BoMs and BoM items, add them to quote for further editing, pricing and export.

Option 2: Create a Customer Quote from an Opportunity

Use this approach when starting a quote before importing or selecting BoMs, or when you want full control over which BoMs are added later.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Navigate to the Opportunity

  1. Open the relevant Account/Opportunity representing customer in Opportunities tab. You will navigate to Opportunity details page.

Step 2: Create a New Quote

  1. From the Opportunity page, click Create New Quote.

Salesforce automatically generates a new Customer Quote.

At this point:

  • The quote contains no BoMs or items
  • It acts as an empty quote ready for assembly

Step 3: Open the Quote

In the Quotes tab, find the newly created quote mapped to the Account/Opportunity from the list.

  1. Click the generated Quote Number to open the quote detail page.

Step 4: Launch PqW Console

From the Quote detail page:

  1. Click Copy BoMs to Quote button in Action dropdown.
  2. This launches the PqW console, where you can add BoMs to a quote, edit, and assemble the same for customer sharing.

Conclusion

Creating a Customer Quote establishes the core workspace where all quoting activities in PqW take place. By completing this step, you have successfully created a centralized quote record linked to the correct Account and Opportunity and launched the PqW Console.

At this stage in the user journey, you have achieved the following:

  • A Customer Quote is created and ready for use in PqW
  • The quote is correctly associated with the Account and Opportunity
  • The PqW Console is available for assembling, editing, and pricing quote data

You are prepared to add BoMs or BoM items, adjust pricing, assign suppliers, and progress toward a customer-ready quote

Whether the quote is created from an imported BoM or directly from an Opportunity, the outcome is the same: a fully initialized PqW console that enables detailed quote assembly and downstream quoting actions.

What’s Next?

After creating a Customer Quote, next step is to continue with adding the BoMs to quote and editing the quote in PqW Console.

We will learn more about the same in next articles.
